Chapter 10

Christine and I discussed a routine for the morning and came to a workable arrangement. With only the one bathroom, I didn't want to mess up her morning routine any more than necessary. She offered not only to take her shower first, but to cook breakfast as well. I was grateful for the consideration and extra time to sleep. Mornings were not my favorite part of the day.

I climbed into the shower and started to play with all the knobs and levers. Every jet was adjustable, hitting in all the right places with just the right amount of pressure. Not recognizing any of the bath products, I took a chance and used shampoo and conditioner, apologizing mentally if I guessed wrong.

I was just finishing up when Christine walked back in.

"You're still in the shower? Get a move on! You wanted to get there a little early didn't you?" Not waiting for a response, Christine walked over to the sink and started to do her makeup.

I was stuck in the shower. I had forgotten to grab a towel and the cabinet was across the room. No way was Christine going to see me naked.

"Christine, can you hand me a towel please?"

"Get it your......oh sorry. Here you go," Christine laughed as she handed me a towel. "You never remember and I like watching you walk out to get one. Sorry. Look, would you be more comfortable if I waited?"

"No, of course not. We're running behind."

"Exactly."

I took the offered towel and dried off inside the shower, hoping the steam fogged glass gave me more protection than I realized. Taking a deep breath, I wrapped the towel around my body and walked out into the bathroom. Christine was more focused on her makeup than on me, or at least she was pretending to be. Either way, I was grateful.

I quickly exchanged the towel for a robe in the bedroom and returned intent on doing my hair and makeup.

"Want coffee? It's there," Christine asked pointing to the carafe and matching cup on the linen cabinet.

"Oh bless you, how did you know?" I asked, rushing over to pour a cup. Christine had even remembered a small pitcher of cream.

"Every morning. You can't function without that first cup. Now hustle."

As I sipped my coffee, I looked at the vanity of makeup and hair tools before me. Nothing was familiar; not the brand of makeup or the style of blow dryer. Oh well, nothing like the present. I put my cup down and began the process. Amazed at how good the makeup felt and how well it went on, I immediately knew this wasn't my usual dime store variety makeup. It looked like everything was top of the line and very, very expensive. Once my hair and makeup were complete, I rushed to the bedroom, interrupting Christine in the process of dressing.

"Oh sorry, didn't mean to intrude."

"You aren't. Hey, we're about to be back on schedule. Go ahead and get dressed and I'll finish breakfast." Christine said leaving me alone to finish dressing.
